High School Senior Takes Grandmothers, Ba and Ma, to Prom

NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT

ADDISON, TX, May 10, 2026: In a touching tribute to family and heritage, 18-year-old Reeyan Mistry, a senior at The Westwood School, chose an unconventional pair of dates for his senior prom—his two grandmothers.

Instead of taking a classmate or friend, Mistry invited the women he affectionately calls “Ba” and “Ma,” saying the choice was simple because both played a central role in raising him and shaping the person he is today. The story, first highlighted by Dallas-area station WFAA, quickly drew attention for its heartfelt message of gratitude and intergenerational love.

Dressed in elegant traditional wear, the two grandmothers—one originally from India and the other from East Africa—attended their first-ever prom alongside their grandson at the school’s annual event. Photos of the trio smiling together have since resonated with viewers across social media and local television audiences.

Mistry’s decision stood out not only for breaking with prom convention, but also for proudly embracing his cultural roots at one of America’s most iconic high school milestones. According to reports, he said honoring the women who helped raise him mattered more than following tradition.

The gesture has struck a chord with many in the Indian American community, where grandparents often play an active role in childcare, cultural upbringing, and passing on family values.
