UPDATE: Victims Identified as Mother and 14-Year-Old Son; Arjun Aravind Faces Two Murder Counts
ACTON, MA, August 12, 2026: Authorities have identified the two people found dead inside an Acton home as 45-year-old Sudha Venkatesan and her 14-year-old son, Sidharth Aravind, as prosecutors announced that 17-year-old Arjun Aravind has been charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of his mother and younger brother.
At a Wednesday afternoon press conference, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan provided the most detailed account yet of the investigation, saying Arjun was taken into custody without incident early Wednesday after police found him inside his mother’s missing 2014 green Honda Accord in Wayland.
Ryan said the investigation has also uncovered what authorities described as concerning online activity by the teenager before the deaths.
“The investigation has so far shown that Arjun had recently been demonstrating some concerning behavior, including using the internet and ChatGPT to make searches for theoretical ideas or fantasy stories regarding the killing of his family,” Ryan said.
Authorities have not released the specific searches or explained what connection investigators believe they have to the killings.
Father Called Police After Tutor Could Not Enter Home
Ryan said the investigation began at approximately 6:37 p.m. Tuesday when Arjun’s father, who owns the Martha Lane home, called Acton Police.
An expected visitor — described by Ryan as a tutor — had arrived at the house but was unable to gain entry. Because that was unusual, Arjun’s father repeatedly tried to contact family members inside the home. When he was unable to reach anyone, he requested that police conduct a well-being check.
Officers entered the residence and found Sidharth on the first floor and Sudha in a finished basement area.
Both had suffered “obvious trauma,” Ryan said, but authorities are awaiting findings from the Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner before announcing the exact causes and manners of death.
Investigators are also awaiting further findings regarding whether a weapon or multiple weapons were used.
Investigators Narrow Timeline of Deaths
Ryan said Sudha was last seen by her husband when he left for work at approximately 7 a.m. Tuesday.
Sidharth had been at a recreational facility earlier in the day and was seen returning home shortly after noon. Investigators therefore believe the deaths occurred sometime within the broader period between those last known sightings and the discovery of the bodies Tuesday evening.
Arjun could not be located after police arrived at the home, and investigators determined that he had allegedly left in his mother’s Honda Accord.
The search continued throughout the night.
Early Wednesday, Wayland police officers responding to an unrelated alarm at a business spotted the Honda in a parking lot on Andrew Avenue. Officers recognized the license plate from a law enforcement alert issued during the search.
Arjun was inside the vehicle and was taken into custody without incident.
Two Murder Counts and Additional Charges
Ryan said Arjun has been charged with two counts of murder, two counts of assault and battery on a family or household member, two counts of assault and battery, use of a motor vehicle without authority, and theft of a motor vehicle.
Because of his age and the way Massachusetts courts handle juvenile murder cases, proceedings involving the motor vehicle charges were scheduled for Wednesday in juvenile court, which is closed to the public. Ryan said Arjun is expected to be arraigned on the murder and other charges Thursday in Concord District Court.
The allegations against Arjun have not been proven in court.
Ryan described the deaths as an “unspeakable tragedy” for the surviving father and the wider Acton community.
“It is an incredibly dark day,” Ryan said, noting that children who had been with Sidharth at the recreational facility Tuesday had seen him leave around noon, only hours before his death was discovered.
Ryan also expressed concern about young people encountering details of the case through social media and said the community would need time to process the deaths.
While emphasizing that there is no longer a threat to the public, Ryan urged families to reach out to loved ones who may be struggling with the news.
The investigation remains active, with authorities awaiting autopsy findings and continuing to examine evidence surrounding the deaths.
ACTON, MA, August 12, 2026— A 17-year-old Massachusetts teenager has been charged with murder after two of his relatives were found dead inside their Acton home, with prosecutors alleging that he had recently used the internet and ChatGPT to search for scenarios involving the killing of his family.
Arjun Aravind, 17, faces murder and assault charges in connection with the deaths discovered Tuesday evening at the family’s home on Martha Lane, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan announced Wednesday.
The case began shortly after 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 11, when Acton Police responded to the residence for a well-being check. Officers entered the home and found an adult woman and a teenage boy dead inside.
Authorities confirmed that both victims lived in the Martha Lane home and were related to Arjun Aravind, but the exact family relationships have not been disclosed.
Aravind, who also lived at the Martha Lane residence, could not initially be located, triggering an overnight search by law enforcement.
During Wednesday’s update, Ryan disclosed a potentially significant element of the investigation: authorities say Aravind had recently displayed what she characterized as disturbing behavior online.
“The investigation has so far shown that Arjun had recently been demonstrating some disturbing behavior including using the internet and ChatGPT to make searches for theoretical ideas or fantasy stories regarding the killing of his family,” Ryan said, according to NBC10 Boston.
Authorities have not publicly detailed the specific searches, when they were made, how investigators obtained them, or whether prosecutors believe they were directly connected to the killings.
The allegation is part of an ongoing investigation and has not yet been tested in court.
Investigators also discovered that a green 2014 Honda Accord belonging to the deceased woman was missing from the Acton residence. Police said they believed Aravind was driving the vehicle.
The Honda, bearing Massachusetts license plate 34PD94, was located overnight on Andrew Avenue in nearby Wayland. Video obtained by NBC10 Boston showed a Wayland Police cruiser behind the vehicle. The Honda was later towed to the Acton Police Department as investigators continued gathering evidence.
Aravind was subsequently located in Wayland and taken into custody.
Authorities had earlier warned members of the public not to approach the teenager or the missing vehicle. Aravind was described as approximately 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighing about 180 pounds.
The deaths and Aravind’s disappearance prompted a significant police response in the normally quiet Acton neighborhood Tuesday night, with investigators remaining at the Martha Lane residence for hours.
Authorities have not yet publicly provided the cause and manner of death of the two victims or detailed the evidence they allege links Aravind to their deaths.
The investigation is being conducted by the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the district attorney’s office and Acton Police.
Aravind is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
