24-Year-Old Student Killed in Collision, Community Rallies for Family

Indianapolis, IND, May 18, 2026: A 24-year-old Indian student from Telangana was killed and several others were injured in a late-night highway crash in Indiana, leaving her family and the Indian student community in mourning.

Navya Gadusu, originally from Nalgonda district in the Indian state of Telangana, died in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 65 near Crown Point, Indiana, late on May 16, according to authorities and family members. She had moved to the United States to pursue higher studies and was traveling with friends when another vehicle slammed into their minivan around 11:30 p.m.

The crash occurred near Crown Point, about an hour southeast of Chicago, where many Indian students in the Midwest live and study.

According to the preliminary investigation by the Indiana State Police, the minivan carrying Navya and several other passengers was traveling at an unusually slow speed while following another vehicle that was reportedly experiencing mechanical problems. Investigators said a driver approaching from behind was unable to slow down in time and crashed into the van. Authorities also said several occupants were not wearing seat belts, which may have contributed to the severity of the injuries.

Navya was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the collision, while multiple other passengers were taken to area hospitals for treatment.

Family members described Navya as the eldest daughter in her family who had arrived in America carrying “many dreams and wishes, like most of us.”

In an online fundraising appeal created by relatives, the family said they are seeking support to cover medical expenses and the cost of transporting Navya’s remains back to India.

“With a heavy heart, we share the unimaginable news of the sudden passing of our dear cousin, Navya Gadusu,” the appeal stated. “Your contributions will help us cover medical bills and other expenses needed to transport the remains of Navya to her grieving family in India.”

The Consulate General of India, Chicago said it is in touch with Navya’s family and members of the Indian community assisting the injured and helping coordinate arrangements.
