Review: Masala Coffee Serves Up an Electrifying Musical Experience in Atlanta

BY VEENA RAO*

Atlanta, GA, July 14, 2026 — Sometimes the best concerts are the ones you attend with no expectations.

Not being a Malayalam speaker and having never heard Masala Coffee before, I arrived at Phase Events curious but unsure of what to expect. Two-and-a-half hours later, I walked away convinced I had just experienced one of the most exhilarating live performances in recent memory—and the perfect start to the Independence Day long weekend.

Presented by T4 Blacktea Entertainment and co-presented by Cakeworld as part of Masala Coffee’s Ektara US Tour, the Atlanta concert was more than a musical performance. It was an immersive celebration of rhythm, energy, and the unifying power of music.

The evening began with an impressive opening performance by Yuva Collective, a talented group of young Atlanta-based musicians. Their polished set, featuring Indian classical and contemporary influences, earned enthusiastic applause and set the stage perfectly for the night’s main act.

Then came Masala Coffee.

The band burst onto the stage with Shivoham, launching the evening with an explosion of percussion, soaring vocals, and infectious energy that immediately captivated the audience. Remarkably, that intensity never waned. For the next two and a half hours, the band sustained an exhilarating pace that kept the crowd engaged from start to finish.

Founder and percussionist Varun Sunil proved to be far more than the band’s leader. Equal parts musician and entertainer, he constantly connected with the audience, encouraging them to clap, sing, get on their feet, and dance. His enthusiasm was contagious, and the audience responded in kind. Before long, much of the crowd was standing, dancing, and matching the band’s energy song for song.

One of Masala Coffee’s greatest strengths is its ability to transcend language. Seamlessly blending Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and other Indian languages with elements of folk, blues, rock, and pop, the band demonstrated that music speaks a universal language.

Their original compositions—including Kaantha Njaanum Varaam, Kavava, and Urangaathey—were enthusiastically received by fans who sang along to every lyric.

Lead vocalist Abhijith Anilkumar was outstanding, displaying remarkable vocal versatility that ranged from soulful melodies to intricate classical passages. His command over classical music added depth and richness to the band’s contemporary sound. Razik Mujawar complemented him beautifully, bringing charisma and powerful vocals to Hindi hits, including songs from Dhurandhar and the chartbuster Chaleya. Together, the band also delighted the audience with popular Tamil and Telugu songs, including memorable tributes to legendary composers Ilaiyaraaja and A.R. Rahman.

The instrumentalists were equally exceptional. Dayasankar drove the performance with powerful, precise drumming, Surya Bharadwaj delivered expressive guitar work, Paul Joseph (“Pauly”) anchored every arrangement with fluid bass lines, and Pranav KS enriched the music with lush keyboard textures. The band acknowledged that its touring violinist was unable to join the U.S. tour after suffering a hand injury. Yet there was never a sense that anything was missing. The remaining musicians produced a full, layered sound that kept the audience enthralled throughout the evening.

Founded in 2014 by percussionist Varun Sunil, Masala Coffee has built a devoted following through its distinctive fusion of Indian folk traditions with blues, rock, and contemporary music. The band’s breakthrough came with its appearance on Kappa TV’s Music Mojo, where its vibrant reinterpretations of popular Malayalam and Tamil songs went viral, earning it a global fan base. Since then, the group has continued to evolve, performing in multiple Indian languages while expanding its catalog of original compositions.

For someone unfamiliar with the band going into the concert, the evening was a revelation. Although many in the audience clearly knew every lyric, the performance was so dynamic and accessible that even first-time listeners found themselves swept up in the experience.

By the end of the night, language no longer mattered. What remained was the unmistakable joy of watching a group of exceptionally talented musicians perform with passion, precision, and genuine camaraderie.

Masala Coffee’s Atlanta stop demonstrated why the band has become one of India’s most exciting independent musical acts. Judging by the standing ovation and the smiling faces that lingered long after the final notes faded, the audience left feeling exactly as this reviewer did: grateful to have discovered a band capable of turning an ordinary evening into an unforgettable musical celebration.
