Vivek Ramaswamy Sweeps All 88 Counties in Ohio GOP Governor Primary

NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT

Columbus OH, May 6, 2026: Vivek Ramaswamy delivered a commanding victory in Ohio’s Republican gubernatorial primary Tuesday night, sweeping all 88 counties in the state and cementing his status as one of the Republican Party’s rising national figures.

County-by-county election maps published by Ohio media outlets showed Ramaswamy carrying every county in the GOP primary—an unusually decisive statewide performance that underscored his dominance in the race. He defeated businessman Casey Putsch to secure the Republican nomination and will now face Democrat Amy Acton, who ran unopposed in her party’s primary, in November’s general election.

Ramaswamy, 40, is a Cincinnati-born entrepreneur and the son of Indian immigrant parents from Kerala, India. A practicing Hindu who attended a Catholic high school in Ohio, he later graduated from Harvard University and earned a law degree from Yale Law School.

Before entering politics, Ramaswamy built his fortune in biotechnology and finance. He founded Roivant Sciences in 2014, a biotech company focused on developing medicines, and stepped down as CEO in 2021. He rose to national prominence with his bestselling book Woke, Inc., which criticized corporate diversity and social justice initiatives, helping establish him as a conservative voice in Republican politics.

Ramaswamy first entered national politics during the 2024 Republican presidential primary, where he gained attention for his combative debate style, strong “America First” messaging, and outspoken positions on culture wars, education, and government reform. After suspending his presidential campaign, he endorsed Donald Trump, who later endorsed his run for Ohio governor. He also received backing from Vice President JD Vance and the Ohio Republican Party.

In late 2025, Ramaswamy publicly pushed back against what he called a growing wave of ethnic hatred on the political right, declaring at a conservative conference that there was “no place” for anti-Indian, anti-Jewish, or race-based bigotry in the future of the conservative movement. Despite the attacks, his sweeping Ohio primary victory suggests many Republican voters ultimately embraced his message over identity-based criticism.

With Governor Mike DeWine term-limited and unable to seek re-election, the Ohio governor’s race is expected to draw national attention. Political analysts currently rate the contest as leaning Republican, though Democrats hope Acton’s statewide name recognition from the COVID-19 era could make the race competitive.

If elected in November, Ramaswamy would become Ohio’s first Indian American governor.
