NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT
Atlanta, GA, May 31, 2025: A 21-year-old Morehouse College student has been charged with murder in connection with the fatal shooting of a Georgia Tech student at an off-campus apartment complex earlier this month.
Nigel Belser turned himself in to the Fulton County Jail on Sunday, May 25. He faces multiple charges, including murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, according to the Atlanta Police Department.
The victim, 22-year-old Akash Banerjee, was a senior at Georgia Tech. He was shot in the head at The Connector Apartments in Midtown Atlanta on the night of May 18. Banerjee was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he died from his injuries two days later.
According to police warrants, Belser allegedly entered the secured apartment complex by following residents inside and proceeded to the ninth floor. He is reported to have waited over an hour in a stairwell, wearing a black face mask, before confronting Banerjee. The warrant states that Belser shot Banerjee in the forehead and then pistol-whipped him during the incident.
Belser’s attorney, Keith Adams, has stated that his client has no prior criminal history and maintains strong community ties. Adams also indicated that Belser may have been the victim in the case, but did not provide further details.
The Atlanta Police Department has not released a motive for the shooting, and the nature of the relationship between Belser and Banerjee remains unclear. The investigation is ongoing.
