Cannes, FRANCE, May 22, 2025: Indian film Homebound, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan and featuring actors Ishaan Khatter, Janhvi Kapoor, and Vishal Jethwa, received a nine-minute standing ovation following its screening at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. The film was showcased in the Un Certain Regard section, which highlights original and different storytelling in international cinema.
Homebound follows the story of two childhood friends from a North Indian village who aspire to join the police force. The narrative explores themes of ambition, friendship, and social realities.
The screening was attended by the principal cast and their families. Reports indicate that members of Janhvi Kapoor’s family, including producer Boney Kapoor and Khushi Kapoor, were present, along with producer Karan Johar. Audience members reportedly applauded the film for several minutes, with some chanting “Bravo.”
The film has gained international attention in part due to the involvement of American filmmaker Martin Scorsese, who joined the project as an executive producer. According to media reports, Scorsese supported the team during screenplay development and editing. He described Homebound as a “beautifully crafted film” and acknowledged its significance in contemporary Indian cinema.
In addition to the film’s reception, Janhvi Kapoor drew media attention for her red carpet appearance in a vintage 1957 haute couture gown, which many observers noted as a tribute to her late mother, actress Sridevi.
Homebound is the only Indian feature film to screen at Cannes this year. The strong reception suggests growing international interest in Indian independent cinema and the continued presence of Indian films on global platforms.
