Atlanta, GA, May 22, 2025: Georgia Tech student Akash Banerjee, 22, died Tuesday after being shot in the head at The Connector, an upscale off-campus apartment building near the Georgia Tech campus. The shooting occurred on the evening of Sunday, May 18, in a ninth-floor hallway of the building.
The Atlanta Police Department released surveillance footage showing a suspect walking down the hallway with what appeared to be a gun in his pocket about 10 minutes before the shooting. According to Atlanta police homicide commander Lt. Andrew Smith, the suspect had previously visited the building looking for Banerjee.
Banerjee was shot following an altercation with the suspect. How the suspect gained entry into the building remains unclear, as The Connector requires key card access for residents and guests.
Authorities believe the act was targeted. “Investigators are still trying to determine the connection between the suspect and Banerjee,” said Lt. Smith.
The case has left the Georgia Tech community in shock, especially among international students, some of whom have expressed heightened concerns over safety. The university has extended condolences to Banerjee’s family and friends and is offering support services to affected students.
According to our sources, Banerjee was raised in Atlanta. He struggled with substance abuse issues but got clean and was making a comeback. He regained admission to Georgia Tech and was working hard to rebuild his life.
Banerjee’s father had dropped him off at The Connector on the day of the shooting.
As the investigation continues, police are urging anyone with information about the suspect to come forward.
