Federal Authorities Seek Group of Tourists Seen Defacing Sedona Landmark

NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT

Sedona, AZ, May 25, 2026 — Federal law enforcement officials are seeking the public’s help in identifying a group of young men captured on video allegedly defacing the iconic red rock formations at Cathedral Rock, an incident that has sparked widespread outrage online and calls for criminal prosecution.

According to local reports, witnesses said four young men were seen carving or scratching markings into the protected sandstone formation on May 20. Video of the alleged vandalism spread rapidly across social media, where many users condemned the behavior and demanded swift action from federal authorities.

Witnesses described the men as appearing to be college-aged and said they allegedly showed little concern about being observed while damaging the rock surface. One witness later said attempts were made to contact authorities while the group was still in the area.

The incident has generated especially intense reactions because Cathedral Rock is one of Sedona’s most recognizable natural landmarks, drawing hikers and visitors from around the world. The area is also regarded by many as a place of cultural and spiritual significance.

Social media posts circulating after the incident identified the individuals as “Indian nationals,” leading to heated debate and backlash online. However, authorities have not publicly confirmed the identities, nationalities, or immigration status of those involved, and no arrests or charges had been publicly announced as of press time.

Federal regulations prohibit damaging or removing natural features on protected public lands. Depending on the nature and extent of the damage, penalties can include fines and possible jail time.

The U.S. Forest Service has urged anyone with information about the individuals involved to come forward as the investigation continues.
