Panchakanya Brings Five Extraordinary Women to the Stage in Atlanta

BY JYOTHSNA HEGDE

An afternoon of Bharatanatyam, music, and storytelling awaits as Noopura School of Bharatanatyam and Kerala Hindus of Georgia present “Legends of Courage, Grace, and Destiny” on November 7.

Atlanta, GA, October 29, 2026: Within the sweeping narratives of the Indian epics live women whose stories linger long after the battles end, of women who loved, questioned, endured, and stood firm as destiny unfolded around them. Their lives carry the weight of difficult choices, the ache of sacrifice, and the quiet fire of resilience.

This November, five of those voices will find expression through the language of dance.

Panchakanya—Legends of Courage, Grace, and Destiny, presented by Noopura School of Bharatanatyam in collaboration with Kerala Hindus of Georgia (KHGA), comes to East Forsyth High School on Saturday, November 7, 2026.

Drawing from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, this thematic Bharatanatyam dance drama brings together Ahalya, Draupadi, Kunti, Tara, and Mandodari. Their journeys unfold across kingdoms and generations, yet the emotions they hold remain familiar: love, grief, hope, responsibility, and the longing to be heard.

A glance, a gesture, a measured footstep: through Bharatanatyam, emotions take shape and ancient narratives become immediate. With evocative music, dramatic storytelling, and immersive stage visuals, Panchakanya invites audiences into the inner worlds of these women, their struggles, their choices, and the strength that sustains them.

Nearly a year of research, creative exploration, and meticulous preparation has shaped the production. Approximately 85–90 artists, drawn from greater Atlanta and cities across the United States, will bring this vision to the stage. Music and lyrics composed and curated especially for the production by accomplished artists from India will give these journeys their musical voice.

Five Women, Five Journeys

Ahalya: A Journey from Silence to Renewal

Deceived by Indra, who assumes her husband Gautama’s form, Ahalya suffers a curse that removes her from the world until Rama’s arrival brings her release. Her story carries enduring questions about judgment, suffering, forgiveness, and the possibility of beginning again.

Portraying Ahalya is Rishika Rao Diagala, a trained Bharatanatyam dancer and a student at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. With interests spanning the performing arts, pageantry, fashion shows, and modeling, Diagala brings a varied creative background to this exploration of a woman emerging from isolation into renewal.

Draupadi: A Voice That Refuses to Be Silenced

Born from sacrificial fire, Draupadi becomes the wife of the five Pandavas and faces public humiliation in the Kaurava court after Yudhishthira stakes her in a game of dice. Her demand for justice—and her refusal to accept indignity without question—resounds through the Mahabharata.

Bringing Draupadi to life is Anila Haridas, founder of Noopura School of Bharatanatyam and the creative force behind Panchakanya. As the production’s conceptualizer, choreographer, and director, Haridas shapes its artistic vision while also stepping into one of its central roles. She holds a master’s degree in Bharatanatyam from Tanjavur Tamil University and is pursuing advanced training under Padma Vibhushan Guru Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam.

Kunti: A Mother Between Love and Duty

Mother of the Pandavas and of Karna, whom she relinquishes at birth, Kunti carries a secret whose consequences reach across a divided family. As war approaches, her encounter with Karna brings maternal love, duty, and the sorrow of separation into painful focus.

Maya Mohan will portray Kunti. An Atlanta-based software professional, Mohan learned Bharatanatyam in her youth and continues to nurture her connection to the classical dance form. Her role places her at the emotional crossroads of motherhood, sacrifice, and responsibility.

Tara: Wisdom Amid the Gathering Storm

Queen of Kishkindha and wife of Vali, Tara urges him to approach his conflict with Sugriva with caution, recognizing the danger posed by Rama’s support for his brother. After Vali’s death, she must navigate grief while safeguarding the future of her son, Angada.

Taking on the role of Tara is Chandra Umapathy, a life sciences and business transformation professional with more than 20 years of experience in biotechnology, diagnostics, and medical technology. Alongside her professional career, Umapathy pursues her passion for creativity through the performing arts.

Mandodari: The Courage to Counsel Against Pride

Queen of Lanka and wife of Ravana, Mandodari urges her husband to return Sita and turn away from a course that threatens his kingdom. Her counsel goes unheeded, leaving her to mourn the devastation she had sought to prevent.

Hinduja H. Nair, a software engineer at a leading bank in Jacksonville, Florida, will portray Mandodari. Her deep-rooted passion for Bharatanatyam brings her to the role of a woman caught between love for her husband and a clear understanding of his destructive choices.

Together, these five performers will give movement and expression to lives often encountered on the page or recalled through familiar retellings. On stage, their stories offer space to pause: to hear the question within a silence, recognize the burden behind a decision, and witness strength expressed through both defiance and restraint.

For families, Panchakanya offers an opportunity to share the stories of the epics across generations and begin conversations about the women within them. For lovers of dance and theater, it promises an afternoon where classical artistry meets the emotional sweep of dramatic storytelling. For anyone drawn to stories of human courage, these five women offer much to discover.

As the dancers take their places and the music begins, ancient stories will unfold in a shared, living moment—carried through rhythm, gesture, and the voices of women whose journeys continue to move us.
