Leesburg, GA, August 25, 2026: A 25-year-old Georgia man has been charged with 22 counts of sexual exploitation of children following an investigation triggered by a cybertip about suspected child sexual abuse material, authorities said.
Smit Sajid Patel of Lee County was arrested after the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit investigated a cybertip submitted to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children on July 28.
According to the sheriff’s office, the tip indicated that child sexual abuse material had been uploaded from an address in Lee County. Following what authorities described as an extensive investigation, Patel was arrested and charged with 22 counts of sexual exploitation of children.
Patel was arrested at his workplace in Albany and transported to the Lee County Jail. He has since been released on bond, according to WALB.
Publicly available booking records indicate that Patel had also been booked in Lee County on Aug. 5, nearly two weeks before the sheriff’s office announced the 22-count case.
That booking lists two felony charges of possessing or controlling material depicting a minor in sexually explicit conduct. Bond was listed at $35,000 on each charge.
A subsequent booking record from Aug. 18 lists additional charges related to the sexual exploitation of children. Another Georgia booking database describes the later case as involving 20 counts.
Taken together, the publicly available booking information appears consistent with the sheriff’s announcement of 22 total counts — two charges reflected in the Aug. 5 booking and 20 additional counts reflected in the later booking. However, authorities have not publicly detailed the allegations underlying each individual count.
The sheriff’s office has also not publicly identified the online service involved in the cybertip or disclosed how investigators connected the alleged activity to Patel.
There is no indication in the information released by authorities that Patel has been accused of physically abusing a child or producing child sexual abuse material. The publicly available records concern alleged possession or online activity involving such material.
No information about an indictment, plea or trial has been announced. The charges are allegations, and Patel is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
