Congressman Hank Johnson Backs Jyot Singh in Georgia House Race

NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT

Peachtree Corners, GA, March 25, 2026: U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson has endorsed Jyot Singh in the race for Georgia State House District 97, calling him “the proven and progressive fighter we need at this moment” and signaling early momentum in the Democratic primary.

Johnson, whose congressional district includes House District 97, said he is looking for a strong partner at the state level to advocate for Gwinnett County and families across Georgia. In a statement, he pointed to Singh’s track record, including his role in supporting public education and organizing efforts across the state. “As the Congressman representing Georgia House District 97, I need a strong partner under the Gold Dome to fight for Gwinnett and families across the state,” Johnson said. “Jyot will be that partner. He’s brought historic investment to Gwinnett’s public schools and helped elect some of Georgia’s most effective leaders.”

The endorsement adds to a growing list of supporters backing Singh’s campaign, including State Reps. Long Tran and Eric Bell, as well as the Georgia Working Families Party. Political observers note that Johnson’s support carries particular weight given his long-standing presence in Gwinnett County and influence among Democratic voters in the district.

Singh, a Gwinnett County native and Yale University graduate, said he was honored to receive Johnson’s endorsement and emphasized their shared priorities. “Congressman Johnson is one of Georgia’s fiercest advocates,” Singh said. “From protecting civil rights to enhancing consumer protections, he has continually stood up for working Georgians. I am honored to have his support and look forward to working alongside him to deliver for Georgia families.”

If elected, Singh would become the first Sikh and Indian American to serve in the Georgia State Legislature. His campaign platform focuses on lowering costs for families, expanding Medicaid, protecting reproductive rights, and defending immigrant and voting rights.

House District 97 includes all of Berkeley Lake and parts of Duluth, Norcross, and Peachtree Corners. The Democratic primary is scheduled for May 19, with early voting set to begin April 27.

Singh, who grew up in Norcross and now lives in Peachtree Corners, is a graduate of Gwinnett County Public Schools and has spent more than a decade organizing in Georgia, including work tied to the state’s 2020 elections and efforts to expand Asian American political engagement. He has also worked in legal and policy roles, including positions at Alston & Bird, the Federal Defender’s Office, and with elected officials at the federal and state levels, and has been involved in civil rights advocacy through organizations such as SALDEF.
