Aubrey, TX, July 27, 2026 — A U.S. Postal Service letter carrier died after collapsing while delivering mail in North Texas during an extreme heat wave, prompting federal and postal investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Umeshkumar Thakkar, 58, of Aubrey, Texas, was found unconscious in his postal vehicle on July 20 while working his route in Little Elm, about 40 miles north of Dallas. Emergency crews responded to the 1600 block of Thornhill Lane around 2 p.m. and performed CPR, but Thakkar was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of death. However, the incident occurred as North Texas was under an extreme heat warning, with temperatures soaring into the triple digits.
Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators reportedly showed Thakkar’s postal truck stopped with its hazard lights flashing around 12:20 p.m., nearly 100 minutes before the 911 call was placed. Customers along the route reportedly became concerned after noticing the vehicle had remained stationary for an extended period.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has opened an investigation into the death, while the U.S. Postal Service is conducting its own review. OSHA investigators may examine workplace conditions, interview employees, and determine whether any workplace safety violations occurred.
The USPS said it was “deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a postal family member” and is providing grief counseling to employees at the Little Elm Main Post Office while the investigation continues.
The National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association (NRLCA) identified Thakkar as a rural Part-Time Flexible carrier who had worked for the Postal Service since 2022.
“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Mr. Thakkar’s family, friends, coworkers, and all those affected by this tragic loss,” NRLCA President Don Maston said in a statement. While emphasizing that the circumstances remain under investigation, Maston said the tragedy “serves as another painful reminder of the challenging conditions letter carriers often face while serving the American public.”
The union urged carriers to follow established heat-safety protocols, stay hydrated, recognize the signs of heat-related illness, and look out for one another.
Thakkar’s death has also renewed scrutiny of the Postal Service’s aging delivery fleet. Many rural carriers continue to drive decades-old Long Life Vehicles that lack air conditioning, although USPS has begun rolling out a new generation of climate-controlled delivery vehicles.
