Santa Barbara, CA, August 5, 2026: A doctoral student studying at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) was found dead after going missing during a solo hiking trip in California’s eastern Sierra Nevada, authorities said.
Vikram Mubayi, a Ph.D. student in UCSB’s Department of Chemical Engineering, had set out on a solo hiking trip in the Big Pine Lakes area over the weekend. He last communicated with his family at around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 1, sharing his GPS coordinates while on the trail. When he failed to return as expected or make further contact, his family reported him missing, prompting a search by the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office and local search-and-rescue teams.
Authorities later located Mubayi’s body near Big Pine Lakes. Preliminary reports indicate that he drowned. Investigators have not released details about how he entered the water, and there has been no indication of foul play. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
Before he was found, Mubayi’s family appealed for information on social media and Reddit, sharing details of his planned hiking route and asking anyone who had been in the area on August 1 or 2 to come forward with information that might assist search efforts.
According to his University of California, Santa Barbara profile, Mubayi was pursuing a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering. He previously earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign before joining UCSB for graduate studies.
Officials have not yet released additional information, including the specific circumstances that led to the drowning. The Inyo County Sheriff’s Office and the county coroner are continuing their investigation.
