Six Indian American Lawmakers Condemn Tearing of Indian Flag Outside City Hall

NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT

Washington, DC, June 15, 2026 — Six Indian American members of Congress have issued a joint statement condemning the tearing of an Indian flag and anti-India rhetoric displayed during a recent demonstration outside Frisco City Hall in Texas, expressing solidarity with the Indian American community in Frisco and across the United States.

The statement was released by Representatives Raja Krishnamoorthi, Ami Bera, Pramila Jayapal, Ro Khanna, Shri Thanedar, and Suhas Subramanyam following an immigration-related protest in Frisco during which a demonstrator tore an Indian flag amid chants and remarks targeting India and Indians.

“We strongly support the constitutional right to freedom of expression for all Americans,” the lawmakers said. “At the same time, we condemn the tearing of an Indian flag outside Frisco City Hall alongside hateful anti-India rhetoric, which continues to fuel anti-Indian violence and xenophobia.”

The lawmakers described the incident as an act of hate and intimidation and said such behavior has no place in the United States.

“Acts of hate and intimidation targeting any community are unacceptable and have no place in our country,” the statement continued.

The congressional response comes amid growing concerns among Indian American residents in Frisco, where public meetings and demonstrations in recent months have frequently featured rhetoric blaming Indians for local issues ranging from immigration and demographics to housing and real estate development.

The lawmakers emphasized the contributions of Indian Americans to American society and called for stronger opposition to xenophobia and discrimination.

“The Indian American community is an important part of our nation and deserves to feel safe and respected,” they said. “As Indian Americans and South Asian Americans face harassment, xenophobia, and hateful rhetoric, leaders must speak clearly: hate targeting any community cannot be tolerated or ignored.”

The statement concluded with a message of support for Indian Americans in Frisco and nationwide.

“We stand in solidarity with the Indian American community in Frisco and across the country,” the members of Congress said. “Everyone deserves to live with dignity and safety, free from fear, harassment, and discrimination.”

The statement marks one of the strongest collective responses from Indian American members of Congress to the controversy in Frisco, where tensions over immigration and demographic change have increasingly spilled into public discourse, drawing national attention from civil rights advocates and community organizations.
