Road rage claims life of Indian American man

NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT

Indianapolis, IN, July 21, 2024: A suspected road rage incident on the southeast side of Indianapolis has left 29-year-old Gavin Dasaur dead, just over two weeks after his wedding. The fatal shooting occurred around 8:15 p.m. on July 16 at the intersection of South Emerson Avenue and Thompson Road.

Police reports and a video shot by an anti-gun violence activist on the scene indicate that Dasaur, visibly agitated, and with a gun in his hand, approached a pickup truck and was heard shouting, “You want to play with me?” while banging his gun against the truck’s door. Shortly thereafter, Dasaur can be seen collapsing on the ground.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found Dasaur lying in the middle of the road with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead shortly after.

The driver of the pickup truck was detained but released following initial investigations. Detectives believe he may have acted in self-defense.

Dasaur’s wife, Cinthya Zamora, expressed her devastation in an interview with 13News. “He was a hardworking man that always went out of his way to help anyone and wanted to give the world to me and his family,” she said. “He did not deserve to die this way. It’s such a tragedy that my husband was murdered in cold blood.” Zamora added, “As a grieving widow, my heart is shattered, and my world will never be the same.”

In a tragic twist, Ronald G. Frieson, the anti-gun violence activist who recorded the altercation on his phone was found dead in his car near East 38th Street and North Arlington Avenue on the city’s east side just two days later, on July 18.

Gee, 39, had dedicated his life to combating gun violence in Indianapolis. In a 2022 interview, he stated, “There’s no such thing as strangers. We’re all family. So, when you’re looking at that, I think it would be hard for you to shoot your brother, your sister, your uncle.”

His untimely death has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the very issue he tirelessly worked to eliminate.
