Jail Hands Over Indian National to ICE After Detainer Request

NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT

Wayland, Mich., April 24, 2026: The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said it has taken custody of an Indian national described as a “criminal illegal alien and convicted child predator” following his release from a local jail in Wayland, Michigan.

In a post on X, ICE identified the individual as Nava Kumar Tupili and said he was transferred to federal custody after county authorities honored an immigration detainer request. According to the agency, the jail chose to turn Tupili over to ICE officers rather than release him back into the community.

ICE said Tupili had originally entered the United States on a student visa, which was later revoked in 2024. The agency did not provide additional details in the post about the underlying criminal conviction, including when or where it occurred.

An ICE detainer is a request asking local law enforcement agencies to hold an individual for up to 48 hours beyond their scheduled release so federal immigration authorities can assume custody.

No further information was immediately available regarding Tupili’s current detention status, legal representation, or potential removal proceedings.
