Indian student shot dead during suspected robbery

Milwaukee, WI, March 5, 2025: Praveen Kumar Gampa, a 27-year-old student from India, was shot and killed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in a suspected robbery attempt on Wednesday. Gampa, who was pursuing a Master’s degree in data science at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, was working part-time at a local store when the incident occurred.

According to reports, the shooting took place near his residence, with unidentified assailants opening fire. His family in India was informed of the tragedy by his friends and is now awaiting further details. Gampa’s father, Raghavulu, shared that he had received a missed WhatsApp call from his son early in the morning. When he tried to return the call, a stranger answered, claiming to have found Praveen’s phone, which led to growing concerns.

The Consulate General of India in Chicago expressed condolences over Gampa’s death, stating in a post on X, “We are saddened by the untimely death of Praveen Kumar Gampa, a Post-graduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The Consulate is in contact with Praveen’s family and the University, helping them with all possible support. Our heartfelt condolences and prayers are with his family and friends of the departed.”

Authorities are investigating the incident, and further details are awaited.
