Greensboro, NC, May 5, 2025: A 21-year-old Indian international student from Ohio was arrested in North Carolina last week for allegedly attempting to scam an elderly woman by impersonating a federal agent, authorities said.
Kishan Kumar Singh was taken into custody by the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) on May 1, after deputies responded to a report from a 78-year-old resident of Stokesdale who suspected she was being targeted in a scam.
According to the sheriff’s office, Singh contacted the woman and claimed her bank accounts had been compromised. Posing as a federal agent, he instructed her to withdraw approximately $34,000 in cash and package it for safekeeping. When Singh arrived at her home to collect the package, he was met by deputies and taken into custody without incident.
Singh, who lives near Cincinnati, Ohio, has been charged with obtaining property by false pretenses and exploitation of an elder adult or disabled adult. His bond has been set at $1 million, and he remains in custody at the Guilford County Detention Center.
Officials have not released details on how Singh obtained the victim’s contact information or whether others may have been involved in the scheme. The investigation is ongoing.
The sheriff’s office warned residents to be cautious of scammers posing as government officials or law enforcement. “No legitimate agency will ever ask you to withdraw money or hand over cash for safekeeping,” a GCSO spokesperson said.
This case is part of a growing trend across the country, where elderly citizens are being targeted in increasingly sophisticated scams. Authorities urge the public to report any suspicious calls or requests to local law enforcement immediately.
