Indian Woman Found Homeless Reunited With Family in India

NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT

Chicago, IL, July 5, 2026: An Indian woman whose plight captured headlines after she was found homeless on the streets of Chicago has been reunited with her family in India, following a coordinated effort by volunteers, a social worker, and the Indian Consulate in Chicago.

The update comes nearly three years after the woman’s story first drew attention in India, when reports described how she had become homeless while struggling with mental illness in the United States.

According to U.S.-based nonprofit TEAM Aid, the woman, whose identity has been kept private, had traveled to the United States to pursue higher education but developed severe mental health issues during her stay. In her vulnerable state, she was reportedly assaulted and robbed, losing her passport, identification, and other belongings, leaving her stranded without documents or a way to return home.

The organization said the breakthrough came when a Chicago social worker named Lucia found TEAM Aid online and reached out for assistance.

TEAM Aid said it worked closely with the Consulate General of India in Chicago, led by Consul General Somnath Ghosh, to secure emergency travel documents and coordinate the logistics needed for her return. The effort also involved the woman’s uncle and the social worker, who helped guide her through the process.

“Working together with Lucia, her uncle, and the consulate team, TEAM Aid helped guide her—step by step—all the way home to India, to the family who loves her,” the organization wrote in a post on X and its website.

The organization said the woman is now “safe, supported, and surrounded by those who care for her.”

Lucia, the social worker who first contacted TEAM Aid, praised the volunteers’ efforts in a statement shared by the nonprofit.

“This successful reunification was made possible only through the dedication, coordination, and unwavering commitment of your TEAM Aid volunteers,” she said. “I am deeply appreciative of your efforts and remain in awe of the impact your organization continues to make. Thank you for being a source of hope and compassion during critical moments.”

Founded in 2017 by Indian-American entrepreneur and philanthropist Mohan Nannapaneni, TEAM Aid is a volunteer-run nonprofit that assists Indians and members of the diaspora facing emergencies abroad. The organization has helped coordinate medical evacuations, repatriation of mortal remains, emergency travel assistance, and support for individuals in crisis, often working with Indian diplomatic missions and local authorities.

The nonprofit described the woman’s return as an example of the impact volunteers can have long after public attention has faded.

“This is what TEAM Aid is,” the organization wrote. “Not a headline. Not a hashtag. A group of real people who show up, who follow through, and who refuse to let anyone fall through the cracks.”
