NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT
Indian-origin French-British filmmaker Alexandre Singh won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film at the 98th Academy Awards for his film Two People Exchanging Saliva. Singh shared the award with collaborator Natalie Musteata, marking a notable moment for filmmakers of Indian origin on Hollywood’s biggest stage.
The win stood out as the only Oscar victory connected to India this year, as no other Indian or Indian-American nominees secured awards at the ceremony. Among those nominated was Indian American documentary filmmaker Geeta Gandbhir, who made history by earning nominations in two documentary categories but did not take home an award.
India’s official Oscar entry and other films with Indian connections also fell short in their respective categories, continuing the country’s long and often challenging quest for greater recognition at the Academy Awards. Singh’s win, however, ensured that filmmakers of Indian heritage were represented among this year’s winners.
