More than 200 days after Indian doctoral student Hari Krishna Reddy Karasani vanished during a solo trip to Alaska, his disappearance remains one of the most perplexing missing persons cases involving an Indian national in the United States. With no confirmed sightings, no physical evidence, and no clear explanation for what happened, the case is once again drawing national attention as advocates and media outlets seek fresh leads.
Karasani, 24, who was originally from Andhra Pradesh and was pursuing a Ph.D. while living in the Houston area, traveled alone to Alaska in late December 2025. According to investigators, he flew to Fairbanks on December 22 before traveling to Healy, a small community near Denali National Park, where he checked into the Aurora Denali Lodge.
His family last spoke with him on December 29, and a friend was in contact with him on December 30. Alaska State Troopers say he was last known to have left the lodge on foot on December 31. He was reported missing after he failed to return to Texas as scheduled.
Despite extensive efforts by law enforcement, no trace of Karasani has been found. Authorities have not announced evidence of foul play, but they have also not determined what happened to him. The case remains open.
The disappearance has puzzled investigators and those who knew him. Friends have described Karasani as quiet, academically focused, and not someone known for adventurous travel. His decision to take a solo winter trip to interior Alaska—where temperatures reportedly plunged to nearly -42°F—has remained one of the case’s biggest unanswered questions.
Adding to the mystery are reports of an unresolved credit card dispute involving a Lyft transaction around the time of his disappearance. While the details have not been fully explained by investigators, the transaction has fueled public speculation and remains one of several unanswered aspects of the case.
Interest in Karasani’s disappearance has resurged as the investigation passed the 200-day mark without significant developments.
One of the renewed awareness efforts has come from the Instagram page @nris_adda, which recently highlighted Karasani’s disappearance. The renewed social media campaign reflects a broader effort by members of the Indian diaspora to keep pressure on authorities and encourage anyone with information to come forward.
The case has also received fresh exposure through missing persons and true crime programs, including the Midday Missing series, which recently revisited the investigation in an effort to reach a wider audience and solicit new leads.
More than six months after he vanished, investigators still do not know why he traveled to Alaska, what happened after he left his lodge, or whether anyone else was involved.
