Boston, MA, August 14, 2026: New details emerged Thursday in the case of 17-year-old Arjun Aravind, who is accused of killing his mother and younger brother inside their Acton, Massachusetts, home.
Aravind appeared in Concord District Court Thursday, where a not guilty plea was entered on his behalf to two counts of murder and related assault charges. He was ordered held without bail. His attorney did not object to his detention and has requested a psychiatric evaluation.
Aravind is accused of killing his mother, 45-year-old Sudha Venkatesan, and his 14-year-old brother, Siddharth Aravind, at the family’s Martha Lane home Tuesday.
Assistant District Attorney Suzanne Wiseman told the court that although the medical examiner has not yet determined the official causes of death, evidence at the home indicated a “physical and violent struggle.” Prosecutors said it appeared that blunt-force trauma was used against both victims.
NBC10 Boston, citing investigators and court documents, reported that blood was found in multiple areas of the house, including along stairs between floors. Authorities allege that a sharp object and a laptop were used during the attacks.
Prosecutors also said that when Aravind was arrested early Wednesday inside his mother’s Honda Accord in Wayland, investigators found items in the vehicle that they say corresponded with evidence at the murder scene.
Another unusual detail emerged about what allegedly happened after Aravind left the house. Investigators say he stopped at a Stop & Shop and purchased approximately $2,000 worth of protein bars and cereal before he was eventually located in a parking lot in Wayland.
Court records also shed more light on concerns within the family before the killings. Aravind’s father told investigators that his son had been diagnosed with autism and had been experiencing behavioral issues. According to the records, the family had begun hiding knives in the home because of concerns about his recent behavior and internet activity.
The Boston Globe reported that police records describe two ChatGPT interactions on the morning of the killings: one shortly before 8 a.m. involving a scenario about killing parents and another shortly after 9 a.m. involving “killing mom.” Authorities had previously said Aravind used ChatGPT to generate theoretical or fantasy scenarios involving the deaths of family members.
Aravind’s defense attorney, Debra DeWitt, offered a markedly different perspective after the arraignment. She said her client did not realize his mother and brother were dead when he left the house and described him as being in a state of shock. She also said the family had tried to obtain help for him and had moved towns and schools in an effort to provide greater support.
Both Arjun and Siddharth attended Acton-Boxborough Regional High School. The school district said counselors and other supports are being made available to students and staff affected by the tragedy.
Aravind is scheduled to return to court on September 11 for a probable cause hearing. The allegations against him have not been proven, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
