Atlanta, GA, November 6, 2024: In a closely watched race for Georgia State Senate District 48, incumbent Republican Shawn Still successfully defended his seat against Democratic challenger Ashwin Ramaswami. The final vote count showed Still with 53.64% of the votes, totaling 51,632, while Ramaswami received 46.36%, or 44,622 votes.
Ramaswami’s campaign attracted national and international media attention over the months, highlighting the growing influence of Indian American candidates in U.S. politics. After the results were announced, Ramaswami offered his congratulations to Still and pledged to continue working on behalf of the district. “I called Shawn Still to congratulate him and wish him the best,” he said in a statement. “I’m looking forward to working together on the issues that matter to our district. Our campaign brought together historically overlooked communities and turned out the vote like never before. Onwards and upwards!”
While Ramaswami ultimately fell short, his campaign succeeded in mobilizing voters from diverse communities, reflecting a broader movement of increased engagement among the Indian American community in Georgia.
In another Georgia race featuring an Indian American candidate, Republican Narender Reddy is trailing Democratic incumbent Michelle Au in the race for State Senate District 50. Au currently leads with 55.26% of the vote (15,716 votes), while Reddy has 44.74% (12,722 votes).
