NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT
Pullman, WA, May 8, 2025: A Washington State University (WSU) instructor has been terminated and faces assault charges after allegedly attacking a student wearing a “Trump 2024 TAKE AMERICA BACK” hat near a popular off-campus bar.
The incident occurred on February 28 outside The Coug, a well-known establishment frequented by students. Jay Sani, a 25-year-old junior, was reportedly approached by Patrick Mahoney, a 34-year-old PhD student and political science instructor at WSU. According to police reports, Mahoney allegedly grabbed Sani’s hat and threw it into the street.
When Sani responded by tossing his food bag toward Mahoney, both Mahoney and Gerald Hoff, a 24-year-old research assistant, allegedly tackled Sani to the ground. While on the ground, Mahoney is accused of slamming Sani’s head into the pavement. Sani reportedly raised his hands in a non-confrontational manner, stating he did not wish to escalate the situation. Mahoney then allegedly used profane language before leaving the scene.
The altercation was captured on surveillance video, and Mahoney reportedly admitted to grabbing the hat during a police interview, stating, “You know, you’re fing wearing that hat, you wanted someone to fing look at it, right?”
Following the incident, WSU suspended Mahoney and removed him from all teaching duties. The university later confirmed his termination, emphasizing its commitment to student safety and the seriousness with which it treats allegations of assault.
Mahoney has not publicly commented on the charges. A court hearing is scheduled for later this month.
