Indian American couple makes history by conquering Mount Everest

NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT

Ann Arbor, MI, January 8, 2025: Harpreet and Navneet Cheema of Ann Arbor, Michigan, achieved a historic milestone on May 23, 2024, by becoming the first Sikh couple to summit Mount Everest. Their achievement also marked the first time the Nishan Sahib, the Sikh flag, was raised at the world’s highest peak.

The couple’s 43-day journey to the summit of the 8,848.86-meter mountain was a test of endurance and faith, requiring them to navigate narrow ridges and face the constant risk of life-threatening conditions. Undeterred, they pushed forward with perseverance, love, and unwavering belief, strengthening their bond as a couple.

At the summit, the Cheemas recited the Sikh hymn “Gagan Main Thaal” and offered prayers for world peace, equality, and harmony. Raising the Nishan Sahib symbolized their deep connection to their faith and the spiritual significance of their journey.

Seasoned mountaineers, the Cheemas have climbed five of the Seven Summits and view this expedition as both a personal and spiritual triumph.
