Cedar Park, TX, May 24, 2026 — Shweta Padmanabha was sworn in as Cedar Park City Council Member for Place 6 earlier this month, becoming the first Indian American woman elected to a city council position in Williamson County, Texas. Located just north of Austin, Cedar Park is one of the fastest-growing suburban communities in Central Texas.
Padmanabha described the moment as both “historic and humbling” in a message shared after taking office.
“Honored and privileged to be sworn in as the Cedar Park City Council Member for Place 6,” she wrote. “Taking the oath and pledging allegiance to the U.S. Constitution was truly incredible. Thank you, Cedar Park residents, for your trust and support — I look forward to serving our community with dedication and integrity.”
Padmanabha’s election marks a milestone for Indian American representation in local government in Central Texas and reflects the growing political involvement of the community at the grassroots level.
A longtime Cedar Park resident, Padmanabha has lived in the city for about 15 years and has described Cedar Park as the place where she and her family rebuilt their lives. A single mother and survivor of domestic abuse, she has spoken about how her personal experiences shaped her commitment to community service and public leadership.
Professionally, Padmanabha has built a career in program and project management, working with companies including Apple, Microsoft, Nike, Nokia, and CVS Health. Her experience includes leading large teams and managing major projects and budgets.
She has also been active in civic and community organizations. Padmanabha previously served as a two-term president of the Indian American Coalition of Central Texas and has worked with several organizations including Austin Sister Cities International, the Greater Austin Asian Chamber of Commerce, and the Network of Asian American Organizations. She also served on Cedar Park’s Community Development Board.
During her campaign for Place 6, Padmanabha focused on issues including responsible growth, infrastructure, public safety, and supporting local businesses.
Her swearing-in adds another Indian American voice to local government leadership at a time when more members of the community are seeking and winning elected office across the country.
