Hindu Temple Says Shooting Incident Involving Devotee Was Random, Not Racially Motivated

NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT

Pontiac, MI, October 22, 2026: A Hindu temple in Michigan has clarified that an incident involving one of its devotees on October 19 was an isolated, random occurrence unrelated to the temple or its religious activities.

The clarification from Devi Parashakthi Temple comes after reports circulated on social media suggesting that a devotee had been shot at while returning home from the temple, raising concerns about a possible attack targeting Hindus.

In a Facebook statement, the temple administration said the incident occurred around 10 p.m. near Perry Street and Walton Boulevard, close to the Auburn Hills-Pontiac border, some distance from the temple premises.

The devotee escaped unharmed.

“Police have apprehended the suspect and confirmed that the incident was not racially motivated,” the temple administration stated.

The temple emphasized that the incident was unrelated to its activities and that its recently concluded Navarathri celebrations had taken place peacefully, drawing a record number of devotees.

According to the administration, security personnel were present during the festivities, and the Pontiac Police Department had been requested to provide additional police presence on the final day.

“Please be assured that the Temple remains safe, and the safety and well-being of our devotees will always be our highest priority,” the statement said.

The clarification follows heightened concerns about the safety of Hindu places of worship after an alleged mass-shooting plot targeting a Hindu temple in Aurora, Illinois, earlier this month.
