Freida Pinto Wears a Taj Mahal-Inspired Manish Malhotra Saree in Surface Season 2

NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT

Freida Pinto’s latest on-screen bridal look is a breathtaking celebration of heritage, craftsmanship—and a touch of cinematic magic.

In the season finale of Apple TV+’s Surface Season 2, Pinto’s character Grace dons an exquisite ivory saree designed by Indian fashion legend Manish Malhotra. But this is no ordinary wedding outfit. The saree, handcrafted by artisans in India, was inspired by one of the world’s most iconic symbols of love—the Taj Mahal.

“It makes me feel so extra, extra special,” Pinto says in a behind-the-scenes Instagram video shared by Hello Sunshine, the production company behind Surface. “That all this time was spent to make one TV bride feel like it was the most important day of her life.”

With elegance stitched into every thread, the ensemble features delicate embroidery meant to evoke the pristine marble of the Taj. “The ivory on the sari is symbolic of the marble,” Pinto explains. “It has clarity and has strength.”

Accompanying the saree is a handcrafted veil, equally opulent—and unexpectedly hefty. “It was all just stunning, and very heavy,” Pinto laughs, recalling how the weight of the veil pulled her head back during filming. “I’m like, ‘Oh, try to look excited about this wedding and don’t feel the weight on your head… metaphorically.’”

The moment is more than just a costume change—it’s a nod to Pinto’s cultural roots and a rare, proud showcase of Indian bridal couture on mainstream television. “The thing I’m very excited about… is this costume choice that really showcases my culture,” she says.
