Community leader and philanthropist Dr. Sampat Shivangi passes away

BY AJAY GHOSH

Washington DC, February 13, 2025: Dr. Sampat Shivangi, a prominent Indian American physician and community leader, has passed away, leaving behind a legacy of philanthropy and public service. His sudden demise has sent shockwaves through the Indian American community, where he was widely respected for his contributions to healthcare, mental health advocacy, and Indo-U.S. relations.

Dr. Satheesh Kathula, President of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI), expressed deep sorrow over his passing. “We are deeply saddened and shocked by the sudden passing away of Dr. Sampat Shivangi, a physician, an influential Indian American community leader, and a veteran leader of AAPI,” he said. “Dr. Shivangi has left an indelible mark on the Indian American community. Over the decades, he dedicated his time and efforts to serving AAPI and numerous other Indian American organizations. His leadership, vision, and tireless commitment to advocating for the community set him apart as a pillar of strength and guidance.”

Dr. Shivangi was known for his tireless efforts in bridging healthcare gaps both in the United States and India. Just last month, he witnessed the fulfillment of one of his lifelong dreams—the inauguration of the Dr. Sampat Kumar S. Shivangi Cancer Hospital in Belagavi, Karnataka, by India’s President, Droupadi Murmu. The state-of-the-art, 300-bed hospital was a testament to his commitment to improving healthcare access in rural areas.

His contributions to AAPI were particularly notable, with his leadership playing a crucial role in organizing the organization’s annual Legislative Day. “AAPI is proud of Dr. Shivangi’s numerous accomplishments, leadership, and contributions to the greater cause of the Indian Diaspora, Indo-US relationship, and particularly for his dedication to enhancing the mission of AAPI,” said Dr. Sunil Kaza, Chair of AAPI’s Board of Trustees.

Dr. Amit Chakrabarty, AAPI President-Elect, echoed these sentiments, calling his passing a great loss to the community. “The Indian American community has lost a great leader, philanthropist, and friend whose contributions will continue to resonate for generations. Through his philanthropic efforts, Dr. Shivangi touched countless lives, always striving to make a positive impact both in the healthcare sector and within the broader community.”

Born and raised in India, Dr. Shivangi dedicated his life to service, both in his adopted homeland and his country of origin. In the U.S., he played a key role in shaping mental health policies, serving on the Board of the Mississippi State Department of Mental Health and the National Board of Directors for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), under appointments from Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden. His leadership extended beyond medicine, as he actively engaged in strengthening Indo-U.S. relations, advocating for policy changes, and fostering diplomatic ties.

Through his philanthropic foundation, Dr. Shivangi established schools, healthcare facilities, and cultural centers, making a lasting impact on countless lives. His passing leaves a void in the Indian American community, where he was regarded as a mentor and visionary leader.

He is survived by his wife, Dr. Udaya Shivangi, and their two daughters, Priya and Pooja Shivangi. As the community mourns his loss, his legacy of service and generosity will continue to inspire future generations.4o
