Indian National Charged in Alleged Fake Armed Robbery Scheme to Obtain U Visas

NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT

Boston, MA, June 19, 2026 — Federal authorities have charged an Indian national living unlawfully in Massachusetts in connection with an alleged scheme involving staged violent crimes designed to fraudulently obtain immigration benefits. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, 40-year-old Mitul Patel of Worcester has been charged with conspiracy to commit visa fraud.

Prosecutors allege that Patel participated in a conspiracy in which co-conspirators orchestrated a fake armed robbery at a convenience store so that individuals involved could claim to be victims of violent crime and apply for U visas, a form of immigration relief available to victims who assist law enforcement in investigations.

Patel’s arrest was announced as part of a broader federal crackdown on public benefits fraud in Massachusetts. The Justice Department said that 15 individuals — including 11 people alleged to be living in the United States illegally and four U.S. citizens — were arrested and charged in a range of fraud schemes involving more than $1.4 million in alleged losses tied to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), MassHealth, disability, and unemployment benefits.

Assistant Attorney General Colin M. McDonald said the cases reveal “a broader, deeply troubling pattern” involving the exploitation of public assistance programs. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said individuals found guilty would face removal proceedings after serving any criminal sentences.

U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts Leah B. Foley described the arrests as “just the beginning” of an ongoing initiative to investigate and prosecute benefit fraud statewide. Federal officials said additional charges are expected as investigations continue.

The charge of conspiracy to commit visa fraud carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, up to three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000. Federal authorities emphasized that the charges against Patel are allegations, and that he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
