Trump Gets a Road in India: Hyderabad to Unveil ‘Donald Trump Avenue’

NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT

Hyderabad, India, June 17, 2026: A prominent road adjoining the U.S. Consulate in Hyderabad’s Financial District will officially be named “Donald Trump Avenue” on June 23, marking an unusual tribute to the U.S. president in one of India’s leading technology hubs.

The inauguration will be led by Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, according to local media reports. The avenue is located in the city’s Financial District, home to major multinational corporations, technology firms, and diplomatic offices, including the U.S. Consulate.

The road-naming proposal was first announced by the Telangana government in late 2025 as part of a broader initiative to recognize prominent global figures and organizations associated with Hyderabad’s international business profile. State officials have said the move reflects Telangana’s strong economic and diplomatic ties with the United States and Hyderabad’s growing stature as a global technology and investment destination.

The decision has attracted attention both in India and abroad because public roads in India are more commonly named after national leaders, freedom fighters, cultural icons, or local dignitaries. Naming a major road after a sitting foreign political leader is relatively rare.

Supporters of the move argue that it highlights the close relationship between India and the United States and acknowledges the importance of American investment and innovation in Telangana’s economic growth. Hyderabad is home to the largest campuses and operations of several U.S.-based technology and pharmaceutical companies and serves as a major center for American business interests in India.

Critics, however, have questioned whether public infrastructure should be named after foreign political figures. Some opposition leaders and activists have expressed concerns about honoring a leader whose policies and political positions have been divisive both in the United States and internationally.

The road naming also comes at a time when India-U.S. relations continue to deepen across trade, technology, defense, and education. Hyderabad, in particular, has emerged as a key destination for American investment and is home to one of the busiest U.S. consulates in India, serving thousands of visa applicants each year.

The unveiling of Donald Trump Avenue is expected to draw significant media attention, with supporters viewing it as a symbol of growing U.S.-India engagement and critics seeing it as a politically charged gesture. Regardless of the differing views, the new name is poised to become one of the most talked-about landmarks in Hyderabad’s rapidly expanding Financial District.
