NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT
San Francisco, CA, June 17, 2026 — In one of the largest technology acquisitions in recent years, Elon Musk’s aerospace company, SpaceX, has agreed to acquire AI coding startup Cursor in an all-stock deal valued at $60 billion, placing Indian-origin entrepreneur Aman Sanger among the biggest beneficiaries of the transaction.
The acquisition, announced on June 16, marks a remarkable rise for Cursor, an artificial intelligence-powered coding assistant that was founded just four years ago by four students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The startup, formally known as Anysphere, was co-founded by Sanger, Michael Truell, Sualeh Asif, and Arvid Lunnemark.
Cursor has become one of the most widely used AI coding tools in the world, allowing software developers to write, edit, and debug code using natural language prompts. The platform gained popularity as part of the growing “vibe coding” movement, in which programmers describe desired outcomes in plain English and AI generates much of the underlying code.
The company’s meteoric growth has made it one of Silicon Valley’s most closely watched AI startups. Founded in 2022, Cursor attracted backing from prominent investors including Thrive Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Nvidia, and the OpenAI Startup Fund. Industry reports indicate the company surpassed billions of dollars in annual recurring revenue within just a few years of launch.
While CEO Michael Truell has often served as the public face of the company, Sanger has emerged as one of the most successful Indian-origin entrepreneurs of the current AI boom. He met his co-founders while studying at MIT, and the group left school to focus on building AI products full time.
According to previous estimates by Forbes, the four founders held roughly equal stakes in the company, making them billionaires as Cursor’s valuation soared. The SpaceX acquisition is expected to significantly increase the value of those holdings.
The deal traces its origins to a partnership announced in April, when SpaceX secured an option to acquire Cursor for $60 billion later in the year. Under the agreement, SpaceX could either purchase the company outright or pay $10 billion toward joint AI development efforts. Less than two months later, the company opted for a full acquisition.
Analysts view the purchase as a major move by SpaceX founder Elon Musk to strengthen his position in the increasingly competitive artificial intelligence sector. Cursor’s technology is widely regarded as one of the most successful AI products for software developers and could bolster Musk’s broader AI ambitions.
Industry observers say the acquisition gives SpaceX access to a proven AI coding platform, a large developer user base, and technology that could enhance future AI systems and software development tools.
The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026, pending customary approvals.
Before MIT, Sanger attended the Horace Mann School in New York, where he was a standout student-athlete and captain of the squash team. Public profiles indicate that Sanger developed an interest in programming at a young age and began coding as a teenager.
For the Indian-American community, the deal represents another high-profile example of Indian-origin talent helping shape the future of artificial intelligence. As AI continues to transform industries worldwide, Aman Sanger’s role in building Cursor from a student startup into a $60 billion acquisition target stands out as one of the most significant entrepreneurial success stories of the current technology boom.
