Metro Atlanta’s Indian Summer Camps Help Kids Connect With Their Heritage

BY SHIKHA DAS SHANKAR*

Somewhere in Gwinnett County this June, a child is coming home smelling of clay from an art project, humming a sloka she just learned, and asking her parents questions they haven’t thought about in years. That’s what South Asian culture camps do — and around Atlanta, more families are finding one every summer.

Heritage-themed South Asian summer enrichment camps offer a rich blend of tradition, learning, and community. Camps that focus on teaching language, customs, and history are growing in popularity across the South Asian community. These camps give children an immersive experience: learning about the language, religion, or history of their heritage through outdoor play, cooking, dancing, and art and craft — all in a fun and engaging way.

For parents, it is also an investment in identity. Parents see culture camps as a meaningful way for children to build pride in their roots. Blending modern academics with traditional cultural enrichment helps address a child’s sense of identity and brings them closer to their heritage in ways that school and home environments often cannot. For the children, the impact runs deeper than just another summer activity. Knowing where you come from and being proud of it, builds confidence that stays long after summer ends.

The demand has not gone unnoticed. Temples, nonprofits, and community organizations across Metro Atlanta have stepped up — some running programs for over a decade, others just finding their footing. What they share is a simple conviction — that every child deserves to know where they come from, and to feel proud of it.

Here are ten camps across metro Atlanta weaving South Asian languages, customs, dance, religion, and history into every summer day.

Yugal Kunj

Yugal Kunj has been enriching the lives of children ages 2–14 since 2008, and their Duluth campus has been offering a 10-week summer camp since 2015. Parents have the flexibility of enrolling their child for one week or the full summer. This year’s theme is Panchtatva — the five elements of water, air, fire, space, and earth. The program covers three core areas: culture, religion, and moral values, alongside career-oriented learning that includes STEM and AI. Kids also enjoy plenty of outdoor sports and activities throughout the week. The camp provides fully vegetarian meals — breakfast, lunch, and snacks — with an emphasis on fresh, non-processed food and no sugary drinks. With 70–100 children attending each week and 350–400 participants over the full summer, the camp is supported by a dedicated team of adult staff and teenage volunteers.

Chinmaya Mission

Chinmaya Mission is back with its beloved community-run summer camps, now in their second decade. This year, children ages 5–9 will explore the glories of Hanuman through stories celebrating the strength children carry within themselves. Kids ages 10–14 will uncover the meaning behind Hindu rituals in a program called “Wisdom in Worship.” Both camps are packed with yoga, outdoor activities, water activities, and arts and crafts. Hot breakfast, healthy snacks, and a hot lunch are freshly prepared each day in the Chinmaya Mission kitchen — all vegetarian, Satvik (no onion or garlic), and nut-free. The camps run for two weeks from the end of June to the first week of July and are led by educators passionate about spreading Indian culture among the next generation.

Shiv Mandir of Atlanta

Shiv Mandir of Atlanta has been running its popular summer camp since 2022, welcoming a batch of 30 kids each year for a week of cultural learning and creativity. Every year the camp features a unique India-inspired theme, which is kept secret until camp begins to build excitement and anticipation. Past themes have included the significance of pooja, gods and goddesses, and women leaders from both history and modern times. Teaching is brought to life through interactive presentations and themed arts and crafts. Dedicated adult teachers and enthusiastic high school volunteers ensure that kids leave with an engaging experience and a deeper connection to Indian culture.

Gokuldham Haveli

This popular, community-driven camp has deep roots in Hindu culture and an impressive track record of growth — from a modest gathering of 25 campers in 2012 to a thriving community welcoming over 260 participants in 2024. The camp offers children a blend of Hindu cultural learning, team-building activities, and leadership development in a fun and inclusive environment. It is also a meaningful space for teenagers, who can develop leadership skills by volunteering as counselors and college leads. Gokuldham’s summer camp will run from July 13–18 this year.

Shree Shakti Mandir

Shakti Mandir’s summer camp has been running since 2001, welcoming an average of 70 children ages 6–14 for a 10-day program spread across two weeks. This year’s theme is Utsavs, where campers will explore Indian festivals along with Hindu traditions, shloks (prayers), and regional culture. To broaden the kids’ horizons, the program also includes traditional playtime, a field trip, and a field day capped off with an annual cultural show. Food is provided for all campers and includes a mix of regional Indian cuisines — Gujarati, Punjabi, and South Indian — along with familiar American options like pasta and sandwiches. With two lead educators and 15–18 trained counselors supported by 10–15 additional volunteers, children are in experienced, caring hands.

Want to inject some high-energy excitement into your child’s summer? The Georgia Bhangra Academy is offering week-long summer camps in June and July, open to kids ages 6–19. Bhangra, a vibrant and rhythmic dance form with roots in Punjab, has taken college campuses across the country by storm — and it’s no surprise that more and more young people want to get in on the fun. Whether your child is a first-timer looking to try something new or a Bollywood and Bhangra enthusiast who never stops dancing, these camps are the perfect fit. The Academy also offers regular classes year-round for those who catch the bug.
