NYC–Mumbai Air India Flight Diverted to Saudi Arabia After False Fire Alert

NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT

New York City, NY, March 20, 2026: An Air India flight traveling from New York City to Mumbai was diverted to Medina on Thursday after a cockpit warning indicated a possible fire in the aircraft’s aft cargo hold.

The flight, AI116, operated by a Boeing 777, made a priority landing in Medina as a precautionary measure following the alert. According to an official statement from the airline, the aircraft landed safely without incident.

Subsequent inspection by ground crews confirmed that the fire warning was a false indication, and no evidence of smoke or fire was found. After being cleared for operations, the aircraft resumed its journey to Mumbai.

Air India officials emphasized that established safety protocols were followed throughout the incident. In aviation, cargo fire alerts are treated with the highest level of urgency, prompting immediate diversion to the nearest suitable airport to ensure passenger and crew safety.

No injuries were reported, and passengers were able to continue their journey after the aircraft was cleared.
