American Airlines flight to New Delhi diverted to Rome after bomb threat

NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT

Rome/New York, February 24, 2025: An American Airlines flight from New York to New Delhi was diverted to Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino Airport on Sunday following a reported bomb threat.

Flight 292 made an unscheduled landing in the Italian capital at approximately 5:30 p.m. local time after the crew reported a security issue, later determined to be a non-credible threat. The aircraft was reportedly escorted by two Italian Air Force Eurofighter jets.

While the airline did not specify the nature of the security concern, sources familiar with the situation told NBC News that the threat was made via email. American Airlines confirmed that passenger safety was the top priority and apologized for the inconvenience.

“We immediately agreed and organized a safe landing,” said airport spokesperson Roberto Rao. He noted that the plane was over the Caspian Sea when the alert was received—about three hours from Rome—suggesting the threat was serious but not urgent.

The aircraft underwent a security inspection and was cleared for departure to New Delhi on Monday after the crew received necessary rest.
