Why Ed Sheeran is Wooing India: Arijit Singh, SRK, Diljit Dosanjh Connection Explained

BY NAMITA DOGRA SUDAN*

In recent months, global pop sensation Ed Sheeran has made headlines in India not just for his sold-out concerts but for embedding himself deeply into the country’s cultural and entertainment fabric. From jamming with Indian music icons like Arijit Singh and Diljit Dosanjh to sharing screen space with Bollywood royalty, Sheeran’s India pivot is no coincidence. It’s a smart, strategic move that’s equal parts heart and hustle.

The Arijit & SRK Effect: “Sapphire” Sparkles with Star Power

Sheeran’s latest single Sapphire, featuring the soulful Arijit Singh, has struck a chord with audiences—not only for its East-meets-West melody, but also for the surprise cameo by Shah Rukh Khan himself.

This cross-cultural collaboration began with Sheeran’s fascination with Arijit’s voice, ever since he first heard Tum Hi Ho from Aashiqui 2. That admiration turned into an online friendship, which culminated in a rare personal visit to Arijit’s hometown—Jiaganj in Murshidabad, West Bengal—where the duo finalized the track.

A source close to Arijit Singh told NRI Pulse exclusively:

“Arijit prefers calling artists like Ed Sheeran and DJ Martin Garrix to Jiaganj because it allows them to live freely, away from the spotlight. He also wants to give his hometown a global platform, and boost local tourism.”

Beyond Music: Sheeran’s Cultural Immersion

This isn’t a case of a pop star parachuting in for a photo-op. Sheeran has been making thoughtful cultural inroads—sporting a Rajasthan Royals jersey while meeting cricketers Riyan Parag and Tushar Deshpande, trying out Hindi and Tollywood phrases, and even appearing on The Great Indian Kapil Show.

In an earlier interview with Brut India, he shared:

“India is one of my biggest markets. The fans, the energy, the music—it’s addictive.”

His cultural curiosity appears genuine, and fans across the country are responding in kind.

Not the First, But Going Deeper Than Most

Sheeran isn’t the first global artist to engage with Indian audiences. Nick Jonas has collaborated with King, Armaan Malik with Eric Nam, and Guru Randhawa with Pitbull. But Sheeran’s India strategy goes further than a few singles or social posts.

Entertainment journalist Faridoon Shahryar, best known for his work with Bollywood Hungama, told NRI Pulse:

“Over the decades, many international artists have been fascinated by India. Think of George Harrison and The Beatles. But what sets Sheeran apart is that he isn’t just doing one-off events. He’s on our TV shows, collaborating with the biggest names in Bollywood and cricket. Artists are driven by their heart. Maybe it started with Diljit, then Arijit, and snowballed from there.”

Earlier this year, Sheeran’s impromptu jam session with Punjabi star Diljit Dosanjh lit up the internet, sparking fan demands for an official release. It signaled that Sheeran was serious about musical synergy—and not just with mainstream Bollywood, but across India’s regional and linguistic spectrum.

Strategic Collaborations: A Star Among Stars

Sheeran’s choice of Indian collaborators isn’t random. He’s aligning with household names who command mass appeal—not just in music, but across comedy and cricket. This multiverse approach, says Mumbai-based entertainment journalist and Film Window founder Heena Kumawat, is no accident.

“Ed Sheeran knows very well that to stay relevant and grow his fanbase, he must connect with India’s youth and influencers. From Kapil Sharma to Virat Kohli, the people he’s associating with already have millions of fans. He’s directly reaching their audiences,” she said.

The Business of Music: India is the New Global Hotspot

Sheeran’s timing couldn’t be better. India’s digital-first, youth-driven music market is booming—with projections estimating a leap to US$ 4.87 billion by 2030, growing at an annual rate of 17.3%.

His Mathematics Tour stops across diverse cities like Shillong, Pune, and Hyderabad—well beyond the usual Delhi-Mumbai route—demonstrate the rising appetite for international music across India’s evolving soundscape.

Final Thought

Ed Sheeran’s India pivot isn’t just a clever PR campaign—it’s a masterclass in cultural connection and commercial foresight. By immersing himself authentically and aligning with India’s biggest cultural influencers, Sheeran is doing more than courting a new fan base. He’s building a legacy.

If Sapphire is any indication, Ed Sheeran’s love affair with India has only just begun.
