Burbank, CA, April 22, 2026: Indian-origin mental health advocate Meera Varma is in critical condition after a brutal stabbing at her home that left her mother dead, in an incident that has shocked both the local community and wider mental health advocacy circles.
Police say the attack occurred around 6 a.m. Monday at the family’s residence on North Brighton Street. Officers responding to a stabbing call found Meera Varma, 25, and her mother, Arti Varma, 59, with serious injuries. Arti Varma was taken to a hospital, where she later died. Meera Varma remained in critical condition, according to the Los Angeles Times and Burbank Police.
Authorities arrested 30-year-old Sergio Fraire later that night. A SWAT team took him into custody around 10 p.m. on East Palm Avenue on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. Police have not yet disclosed a motive or clarified any relationship between the suspect and the victims.
Meera Varma, who has been active in youth mental health advocacy, is known for her work with high-profile initiatives linked to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, and for participating in programs alongside media icon Oprah Winfrey. According to her public profile, she was the youngest speaker in TEDx UCLA history in 2023 and has addressed issues related to youth mental health at national forums, including a White House event.
Her father was in India at the time of the incident.
Arti Varma, a longtime elementary school teacher, had worked at Bret Harte Elementary School for over 15 years, teaching multiple grade levels. The school community has begun mourning her loss, with students and parents leaving flowers and handwritten notes at a makeshift memorial. One student described her as “always happy” and encouraging, recalling how she urged students to persevere through challenges.
The case remains under active investigation.
