Georgia-Born Author Kiran Bhat Wins Literary Honor at Britain’s House of Commons

BY JYOTHSNA HEGDE

Atlanta, GA, May 1, 2026: Atlanta-born author and literary innovator Kiran Bhat has been honored with the prestigious International Writer of the Year 2026 award at a special ceremony held at the historic House of Commons.

With this recognition, Bhat becomes the first person of Indian origin living outside the United Kingdom to receive the honor from the British House of Commons, marking another milestone in his growing international literary career.

The ceremony brought together writers, diplomats, lawmakers, and cultural leaders from around the world to celebrate literature’s role in building global understanding. Organizers praised Bhat for his innovative approach to storytelling across novels, poetry, travel writing, multilingual literature, and digital literary projects.

“Kiran Bhat represents the future of world literature. His writing is fearless, borderless, and profoundly human,” a representative from the awards committee said during the event. “Honoring him as International Writer of the Year reflects our belief in the importance of global voices shaping the literary landscape.”

Though now based in Mumbai, Bhat reflected on his roots in Georgia while speaking about the significance of the recognition.

“I personally don’t give much importance to awards, and I feel what matters is the work that I do,” Bhat told NRI Pulse. “I have worked hard to reach wherever I’ve reached, and I continue to hope that I will keep going somewhere.”

He added that he hopes this recognition inspires others to think beyond limitations and embrace global opportunities.

“I hope this inspires people to go out and be a part of global discourse. You don’t have to be part of wherever you’re born and brought up. You can go to the UK, you can do big, exciting things in Mexico, Africa…. You can do whatever you set your heart and mind to,” he said.

Reflecting on his own journey, Bhat added, “This little boy, who grew up in Karnataka and Georgia, did things that no one thought he could ever achieve. If he can do it, so can you.”

Bhat’s literary career is defined by an unusually global perspective. Fluent in twelve languages, he has published books in five languages, including “We of the Forsaken World,” “Speaking in Tongues,” and “Girar.” His work has appeared in leading literary journals such as The Kenyon Review, Prairie Schooner, The Brooklyn Rail, and Cordite Poetry Review.

Having traveled to 177 countries and lived in 25 cities worldwide, Bhat often explores themes of migration, identity, language, and belonging through his work. Event organizers noted that his storytelling consistently challenges traditional literary structures while encouraging readers to embrace a broader global perspective.

Beyond his own writing, Bhat also contributes to literary and cultural communities internationally. He curates for the Yatha Katha Literature Festival in Mumbai, helping amplify voices from the global south, and serves as co-chair of the Environmental Sustainability Subcommittee of the Global Indian Council.

For Atlanta’s literary and Indian-American communities, Bhat’s recognition is a source of pride and a reminder that global impact can emerge from local roots. His journey from Georgia to one of the United Kingdom’s most historic institutions reflects the growing influence of diverse voices in shaping contemporary world literature.
