Detroit, Michigan, January 1, 2025: Congressman Shri Thanedar, an Indian American Democrat representing Michigan, has sparked backlash online with his recent statement on X (formerly Twitter) about a bipartisan resolution he introduced condemning Hinduphobia. The resolution highlights the growing instances of hate and discrimination faced by the Hindu community in the U.S.
“Racism in America is still alive and well, and we must stand up to it together,” Thanedar wrote on X. “Just read the replies to any recent post that includes ‘H-1B’ to see the deplorable rhetoric targeting Indian Americans. That’s why I introduced a bipartisan resolution condemning all Hinduphobia.”
Thanedar’s post sought to bring attention to the vitriol often directed at Indian Americans, particularly those associated with the H-1B visa program, which allows skilled foreign workers to work temporarily in the United States. However, his remarks provoked a wave of negative responses on X.
Critics of the H-1B program seized on Thanedar’s statement to voice their grievances. One user wrote, “By calling H-1B workers ‘Indian Americans,’ you admit the program is a complete fraud. H-1Bs are temporary work visas. Nobody on an H-1B is an American.”
Another comment accused H-1B visa holders of cultural incompatibility: “H1Bs are not Indian Americans as well. They’re just straight-up Indians with cultural norms in conflict with ours. If they don’t treat their fellow Indians equally, imagine what they really think about Americans.”
A third user implied H-1B holders exploit immigration loopholes, stating, “They move here, then move their wives here and have anchor babies immediately. They buy a home, enroll into public school, and wait for a green card. I have many Indian friends who do this.”
Congressman Thanedar, who immigrated to the United States decades ago and has often spoken about his journey as an Indian American, has not responded directly to the online comments. However, his office issued a statement emphasizing the need for unity. “The congressman introduced this resolution to shine a light on the harmful prejudice faced by the Hindu community and to call for collective action against all forms of hate.”
The debate over Thanedar’s resolution comes amid increasing reports of hate crimes and xenophobic incidents targeting Indian Americans.
“Condemning Hinduphobia isn’t just about standing up for Hindus. It’s about ensuring that America remains a land of opportunity and respect for all communities,” said Arvind Patel, a spokesperson for the Indian American Advocacy Forum.
