Air India Unveils Maharaja Lounge at San Francisco Airport

Air India has announced the opening of its newest signature airport lounge at San Francisco International Airport, expanding its premium offerings in North America as part of the airline’s ongoing transformation initiative. Called the Maharaja Lounge, the new facility will officially open to guests on May 23 and is intended to bring a more elevated and distinctly Indian travel experience to one of Air India’s key international gateways.

Located near Gate A1 in the airport’s International Terminal, the 3,300-square-foot lounge accommodates up to 80 guests and will be accessible to Air India First and Business Class passengers, as well as Platinum and Gold members of the airline’s Maharaja Club loyalty program. A dedicated area has also been reserved exclusively for First Class travelers.

According to Air India, the San Francisco lounge follows the recent launch of its flagship lounge in Delhi and represents the second in a planned series of signature lounges designed to showcase the airline’s evolving identity and service standards.

“The opening of the Maharaja Lounge at San Francisco builds on the recent launch of our flagship lounge at Delhi, marking the beginning of a new generation of signature lounges for Air India,” said Campbell Wilson. He described North America as a key market for the airline and said the company is investing in creating a more consistent and elevated travel experience across its network.

Designed by global hospitality firm Hirsch Bedner Associates, the lounge combines contemporary interiors with Indian-inspired elements. Air India said the design incorporates hues of champagne, ivory and deep red that reflect the airline’s branding, along with signature motifs and artwork celebrating regional heritage. Some installations also feature upcycled aircraft components reimagined as art pieces.

The lounge includes several themed spaces intended to cater to different traveler needs. Among them is The Aviator’s Bar, featuring wines, whiskies and signature cocktails, including a “Maharaja Manhattan” inspired by black pepper, described by the airline as the “Maharaja of spices.”

Travelers will also have access to a Tarmac View area overlooking aircraft operations, a Social Zone designed for interaction and networking, and a dining section offering Indian and international dishes along with live cooking stations. A quieter Private Zone has been created for First Class guests seeking a more secluded environment for work or relaxation before departure.

The opening comes as Air India continues efforts to redefine its global image, focusing on modern luxury while retaining what the airline calls the warmth and hospitality associated with India.
