UGA School of Medicine Names Vaishali Rani Schuchert Associate Dean for Student Affairs

NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT

Athens, GA, April 23, 2026: Vaishali “Rani” Schuchert has been named associate dean for student affairs at the University of Georgia School of Medicine, where she will oversee a wide range of student-focused programs and services. Schuchert began the role in a part-time capacity on April 1 and is expected to join full time on June 1.

In her new position, Schuchert will provide “comprehensive oversight, coordination and administration” of student affairs functions, including academic success programs, financial aid services, student wellness initiatives, career counseling, and academic advising. The role also involves shaping policies and programs aimed at promoting student development, supporting well-being, and enhancing the overall educational experience at the medical school.

Schuchert joins the University of Georgia after a long tenure at the University of Pittsburgh, where she served as director of medical student education for the Department of Surgery, surgery clerkship director, and associate professor of surgery and critical care medicine. She has also worked as an attending surgeon and intensivist at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center since 2003.

“With her extensive experience in medical education and a career driven by student advocacy, Dr. Schuchert is perfectly positioned to lead our student affairs efforts,” said Founding Dean Shelley Nuss. “Dr. Schuchert will be a strong advocate and trusted leader for our students during their time at the School of Medicine.”

During her time in Pittsburgh, Schuchert received multiple honors, including being named Clerkship Preceptor of the Year in 2019, 2022, and 2024. She was also elected to the Academy of Distinguished Medical Educators in 2024. Her academic contributions include participation in curriculum development, service on committees related to student advising and admissions, and more than 25 publications spanning articles, book chapters, and abstracts.

Schuchert said the decision to join the School of Medicine was driven in part by its mission to address physician shortages in Georgia, particularly in primary care and general surgery.

“The school’s mission to train the future physicians of Georgia, with a focus on what is needed most, primary care and general surgery, spoke to me directly,” she said. “My father is a retired primary care physician from a small town where patients would have nowhere to go if it weren’t for him.”

She added that she has seen firsthand the impact of shortages in surgical care. “I personally experience the acute shortages in general surgery in a very real way with individual patients who are unable to receive basic surgical care and must be sent hours away from home just for a surgeon. I knew I wanted to be on the team that addresses these issues at the state level.”

Schuchert said her focus will be on supporting students holistically as they navigate the challenges of medical training.

“Our job in the Office of Student Affairs is to identify how to best support each individual student,” she said. “We want to empower our students to seek support when needed and proactively develop habits and behaviors that will help them succeed in medical school and beyond.”

“Medical school is hard, and it only gets harder after that with residency and becoming attending physicians,” she added. “We want our graduates to carry the reputation of being true professionals with impeccable character, resilience and integrity.”

Schuchert earned her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania and completed her medical degree, general surgery residency, and surgical critical care fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh.
