Kajol, Kriti’s Do Patti fails to handle sensitive themes with nuance

NRI PULSE STAFF

The story of Do Patti begins in the home of twin sisters Saumya and Shailee (both played by Kriti Sanon), whose lives unravel after the passing of their mother.

Saumya, dealing with PTSD, is misunderstood by Shailee, leading to a painful rift. As the sisters grow older, Dhruv Sood enters Saumya’s life, offering a semblance of hope, while Shailee, embittered, vows to disrupt Saumya’s happiness. Dhruv’s eventual marriage to Saumya leaves Shailee feeling betrayed, setting off a chain of increasingly volatile events. Dhruv is later accused of attempting to kill Saumya, bringing in Kajol as a detective with her own moral struggles. Can she uncover the truth?

While Do Patti promises a compelling mystery, the film falters in delivering the sensitivity or depth needed to explore its serious themes, especially around domestic abuse. The narrative lacks nuance, glossing over the complexities of trauma. The script feels shallow, missing an opportunity to make a lasting impact on audiences.

Though marketed as a courtroom drama with surprising twists, the storytelling feels overwrought, with scenes that often come across as melodramatic rather than engaging. The direction also struggles to keep the film grounded, often resorting to overly theatrical acting that detracts from the story’s intensity. Kriti Sanon’s performance occasionally veers into exaggerated territory, and Kajol’s cop character, despite her presence, doesn’t add much depth to the proceedings. Television actor Shaheer Sheikh makes a mark in his debut feature movie.

The production does have its bright spots, with good visuals and camera work. The music, however, is forgettable, with nothing especially memorable beyond the song Ranjhan. With more nuanced direction, the movie might have achieved a more powerful impact. Unfortunately, Do Patti falls short, warranting only two and a half stars.
