Indian golfer Lahiri second at Wells Fargo Championship

Charlotte (North Carolina), May 6 (IANS) Leading Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri has got off to a stupendous start in the $7,300,000 Wells Fargo Championship as he scored six-under 66 in the opening round to grab the second place here.

The world No.55 on Thursday scored six birdies on a flawless performance at the Quail Hollow Club.

He trailed leader Andrew Loupe and Steve Wheatcroft by a stroke, while defending champion Rory McIlroy scored one-over 73 to be tied 70th.

“I have been playing good golf — I need to be more consistent though. The stuff my coach and I worked on after the Masters, when I took a couple of weeks off, it’s beginning to show the improvement. I feel like my game’s gotten better every week,” Lahiri said.

Among the big names, Phil Mickelson scored a 69, while Justin Rose registered a 70, while Englishmen Ian Poulter and Paul Casey shared the 19th spot on 70.
