Birthday Celebration Turns Tragic: Indian National Drowns at US Waterfall

NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT

St. Louis, MO, April 13, 2026: A 26-year-old software engineer from Andhra Pradesh, India, died in a tragic drowning incident in the United States while celebrating his birthday with friends at a waterfall. Singireddy Sai Srihari Krishna, a native of Bobbili, drowned at Meramec State Park—located about an hour southwest of St. Louis—where he had gone with two Telugu colleagues to mark his 26th birthday on Sunday. He ventured into the pool at the waterfall but was swept away by a strong current.

According to accounts, Krishna, who was known to be a confident swimmer, entered the water voluntarily. Within minutes, he was caught in a powerful current described in reports as a whirlpool and was pulled away. Despite efforts by his friends to rescue him, they were unable to reach him due to the force of the water and the depth of the pool.

Emergency responders were called to the scene, and a search operation was launched. His body was later recovered.

Krishna had moved to the United States to pursue higher education and had completed his master’s degree before beginning his career as a software engineer in late 2025. Friends and acquaintances described him as an enthusiastic swimmer who had even worked as a swimming coach during his student years.

He is survived by his parents, Srinivasa Rao and Ramadevi, who remain in India. His sudden death has left his family and residents of his hometown in shock. Efforts are underway to repatriate his body to India.

The incident has also drawn attention to the risks associated with swimming in natural water bodies in the United States. Waterfalls and river pools, particularly in mountainous and forested regions, are known for strong undercurrents, sudden drops, and hydraulic forces that can overwhelm even experienced swimmers.

Authorities have described the death as an accidental drowning linked to hazardous water conditions.
