September trial for woman accused of neglect in death of newborn

New York, July 3 (IANS) A US court will hear in September the case of an Indian-American woman who has been accused of neglect in the death of her newborn a year ago, a media report said.

Purvi Patel, 32, has been charged with Class A felony in connection with the death of her seven-month-old infant, who was found dead in a dumpster in Mishawaka in the US state of Indiana in July last year, South Bend Tribune reported Thursday.

Patel appeared before St. Joseph Superior Court Judge Wednesday for a motion for continuance.

The judge officially set Sept 29 for a jury trial after numerous trial dates had been set for Patel throughout the past year.

Patel’s defence attorney, Jeff Sanford, had previously asked for the trial to be postponed for a few more months.

According to an earlier media report, Patel has been accused of taking drugs to abort a seven month-old foetus she was carrying inside her.

An investigation showed that Patel put the foetus in a grocery bag and then threw it into the dumpster, stifling the baby’s chances of life.

An autopsy conducted by police showed that Patel cut the umbilical cord herself and the baby was apparently alive when she dumped it.
