Deaths of Indian-Origin Woman and Husband Ruled Apparent Murder-Suicide

NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT

Forest Acres, SC, June 2, 2026 — Authorities have identified the two people who died following what investigators believe was a domestic violence-related murder-suicide at a home on Barnes Springs Road.

The victim was identified as Annie Christinal Pushpanathan, 53, a U.S. citizen of Indian origin. The suspect was identified as Kenneth Dwain Benton, 67, who died Thursday at a local hospital after suffering a gunshot wound.

According to the Forest Acres Police Department, officers responded to the residence on May 26 after a concerned family member requested a welfare check. After forcing entry into the home, officers found Pushpanathan dead from a gunshot wound.

Police then made contact with Benton inside the residence. Hostage negotiators were called to the scene and persuaded him to surrender. Authorities later determined that Benton had suffered a gunshot wound before officers arrived. He was transported to a local hospital, where he died two days later.

In a statement, the Forest Acres Police Department said the preliminary investigation points to a murder-suicide, though the case remains active and ongoing. Investigators believe the incident was an isolated act of domestic violence and that there is no threat to the public.

Records show that between 2015 and 2021, Forest Acres police responded to five complaint calls involving the two individuals at the residence. Police said there was not enough evidence during those incidents to pursue a case, but resources were offered each time and were declined.

“This is an incredibly tragic situation that has deeply impacted everyone involved,” said Forest Acres Police Chief Don Robinson. “Based on the information gathered thus far, investigators believe this was an isolated domestic violence incident, and there is no threat to the public. While the investigation remains ongoing, this case serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the devastating consequences domestic violence can have on individuals, families, and entire communities.”

Community members said neighbors and Indian American support groups have been assisting Pushpanathan’s family and helping coordinate efforts to transport her remains to India.

Anyone experiencing domestic violence or concerned about the safety of a loved one is encouraged to seek help. Assistance is available through Sistercare at 803-765-9428 or the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-SAFE (7233).
