Indian National Dies by Suicide in US Prison Months After 35-Year Sentence for Child Exploitation

NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT

Oklahoma City, August 7, 2025:A 31-year-old man from Telangana, India, died by suicide in a U.S. federal prison on July 26, just four months into a 35-year sentence for sexually exploiting minors online.

Kurremula Sai Kumar, a native of Nellutla village in Telangana’s Janagama district, was found unresponsive in his cell after reportedly hanging himself. He was pronounced dead shortly afterward. U.S. prison officials have not released further details, but an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death is underway.

His grieving family traveled from India to the United States to perform his last rites.

Sai Kumar had moved to the U.S. nearly a decade ago and was living in Edmond, Oklahoma with his wife at the time of his arrest. In March 2025, a U.S. District Court sentenced him to 420 months (35 years) in federal prison after he pleaded guilty to multiple charges related to the sexual exploitation of minors and distribution of child pornography.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Sai Kumar used social media platforms to pose as a 15-year-old boy, targeting underage girls. He manipulated three minor victims into sending sexually explicit material and later distributed those images. The FBI investigation also uncovered evidence that he had threatened and blackmailed several other girls by threatening to leak their private images online.

During sentencing, prosecutors called the crimes calculated and devastating. U.S. District Judge Charles Goodwin described the offenses as among the most serious the court had seen, citing the lifelong trauma inflicted on the young victims.

“This defendant caused unthinkable harm,” said FBI Special Agent Doug Goodwater at the time. U.S. Attorney Robert J. Troester added that the sentence reflected the justice system’s commitment to protecting children and holding online predators accountable.
