Indian American student arrested for setting two fires in campus library

San Jose, CA, April 17, 2024: A 19-year-old Indian-American sophomore at San Jose State University has been arrested and accused of arson following investigations into two fires at the Martin Luther King Jr. Library on campus.

Cal Fire, in conjunction with the San Jose State University Police Department and the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) Arson and Bomb Unit, launched a probe into the fires that occurred on March 31 and April 8. Through meticulous canvassing, analysis of surveillance footage, and pursuit of leads, authorities identified the suspect as Amogh Upadhya.

Upadhya, who was raised in Dublin, California, stands accused of setting fire to the library. Despite his background in robotics and machine learning, Upadhya’s motive for the alleged arson remains unknown.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Upadhya attended Dublin High School from August 2018 to June 2022. In August 2022, he entered San Jose State University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in engineering technology. Additionally, in September 2023, he obtained his certification as an Amazon Web Services cloud practitioner.

Upadhya was arrested on April 12 and is currently being held on $400,000 bail. He faces four counts of arson.
