Akshaye Khanna’s Dhurandhar Avatar and Sunny Deol’s Dialoguebaazi Still Fail to Make IKKA Click

BY NAMITA DOGRA SUDAN*

Nearly three decades after Border, Sunny Deol and Akshaye Khanna face off in Netflix’s courtroom thriller, Ikka. Directed by Siddharth P. Malhotra (Hichki, Maharaj), the film trades battlefield explosions for legal fireworks. However, despite a delicious, high-stakes moral dilemma, the courtroom thriller ultimately sacrifices legal nuance for loud, melodramatic clichés.

Plot and Cast

The narrative centers on Arjun Mehra (Sunny Deol), an undefeated defense attorney known as “Ikka” for his uncanny ability to flip verdicts at the final hour. Arjun’s spotless career is shattered when his young daughter battles leukemia and desperately requires a rare bone marrow transplant. In a twist of fate, Arjun discovers that his daughter was actually adopted. Her biological mother, played with quiet grace by Dia Mirza, was a victim of a past tragedy. This reveals a shocking genetic link: the only compatible biological match who can save the girl is Shauryamann Gaur (Akshaye Khanna), an entitled, wealthy politician’s brat.

Shauryamann happens to be accused of a brutal murder. Facing him in the courtroom is Madhura Banerjee (Tillotama Shome), the lead state prosecutor tasked with bringing the corrupt politician’s son to justice. Through ruthless blackmail, Shauryamann forces Arjun to take over his defense, setting aside his moral compass to defeat Madhura in court and win freedom for a man he strongly believes is guilty, using the life-saving transplant as ultimate leverage.

For fans of Hindi cinema, Akshaye Khanna’s performance provides an intense wave of nostalgia. His mannerisms, slick look, and sharp dialogue delivery will constantly remind you of his iconic character of Rehman Dakait from Dhurandhar. While it feels like an exact copy of that legendary persona, it strangely suits his character perfectly here. It does not mean he failed to innovate; Khanna is absolutely fabulous in the movie, anchoring the film with a menacing, smirk-filled charisma that completely commands the screen.

Positives

  • Brilliant Screenplay: The tight pacing and gripping narrative structure keep you hooked from start to finish.
  • Fabulous Acting: Every actor delivers a strong performance, particularly the central acting duel between Deol and Khanna.
  • Decent Weekend Watch: While the few twists and turns are predictable, they provide enough entertainment to sustain interest.

Negatives

  • Unnecessary Dialoguebaazi: The script relies too heavily on loud, theatrical speeches instead of sharp, intelligent legal maneuvering.
  • Weak Prosecution: Tillotama Shome’s prosecutor character is a major letdown. She is written as perpetually nervous and defeated, never looking competent throughout the movie.
  • Flat Narrative Arc: The film lacks major cinematic highs, failing to deliver truly unexpected or mind-bending twists.

Overall Verdict

Ikka is a decent, engaging watch that you can stream whenever you have free time. It is a good thing that the producers skipped a theatrical release and sent it directly to Netflix, as its safe pacing and predictable thrills make it a perfect OTT watch for a lazy weekend. It is currently streaming worldwide as a Netflix original movie with a total runtime of 132 minutes.

Final Rating: ★★½ (2.5 / 5 Stars)
